Atletico Madrid dump Real Madrid from Copa del Rey in thrilling win

 Atletico Madrid secured a thrilling 4-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Round of 16 of the Copa del Rey, thanks to goals from Antoine Griezmann and Rodrigo Riquelme in extra time. The intense derby clash delivered a remarkable turnaround from their recent encounter in the Spanish Super Cup.


Atletico winger Samuel Lino initiated the scoring with a counter-attack goal in the 39th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error. However, Real Madrid responded just before halftime as goalkeeper Jan Oblak's mistake led to an own goal from a Luka Modric free kick.



The match took another twist in the 57th minute when a poor pass from Atletico's Eduardo Camavinga resulted in an easy goal for Álvaro Morata. Despite Morata missing a golden opportunity later, a counter-attack led by Jude Bellingham saw Joselu heading in the equalizer in the 82nd minute, forcing the game into extra time.


In the 100th minute, Griezmann showcased his brilliance by stealing the ball and scoring a sensational goal. Riquelme sealed Atletico's victory in the 119th minute with a composed finish.


Madrid coach Diego Simeone praised the performance, saying, "It was an amazing goal, probably one of his best." The match was marked by competitiveness, with some heated moments, including a spat between Simeone and Vinícius after the end of regulation.


Atletico Madrid will now advance to the Copa del Rey quarterfinals, joining other notable teams in the draw. The victory ended Real Madrid's impressive unbeaten run of 21 matches.


The intense and high-tempo clash delighted spectators, offering a memorable spectacle decided in extra time. Atletico's captain Koke expressed satisfaction, highlighting the excitement of their recent encounters with Real Madrid.


The quarterfinal draw will feature Atletico Madrid, Barcelona, Girona, Real Sociedad, Celta Vigo, Mallorca, Athletic Bilbao, and Sevilla.
